There are some controversial proverbs with different interpretations and selective meanings attributed to some old sayings depending on individual and some personal circumstances.
For instance, one goes like this; “A rolling stone gathers no moss”. Question is in this day and era where permanent and pensionable jobs for 45 year period in one company (until one reaches retirement age of 65 years of age) are rare, scarce, few and far apart, who needs to gather the moss and for who or what? It is like an iron gathering rust in one place. You overstay in one company, you risk being part of the furniture! Lol.
Not withstanding, the original meaning may have meant that a person who never settles in one place will never be successful. Equally true is that a person must keep active in order to avoid stagnating. Agreed, a person who is always travelling and changing jobs has the advantage of having no responsibilities, but also has disadvantages such as having no permanent place to live. International Development Experts and Consultants some of whom I have worked with in my previous life are people on the move, they are always moving, globe trotting from one Continent to another, from one Country to another, from one Project Assignment to another. It is a global world, although the Word Xenophobia is becoming prominent and a reality in some Countries. These group of InterNationals seem to have no roots in one place or another, may seem to avoid responsibilities and cares. I’m more inclined to go for a common modern meaning which say that a person must stay active to avoid stagnation.
I have had the privilege and rare opportunities to change jobs close to 10 times now and I have worked (some on Short Term Assignments (STA) in Africa, Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Americas. Like Tom Stoppard stated,”Every Exit is an entry somewhere else”. Reminds me of story of a Zambian, who had overstayed his vacation leave in Malawi and almost stranded with no available transportation. He approached a Witch Doctor who advised him to go behind the other side of the door without looking back. He allegedly found himself at one of the main bus station in Zambia.
Ifintu kweshako. Kuchinjako. Not fye walikala muchipani chimo as a Cadre for 20 years ati Chichetekelofye na menshi yalakola. UNIP or MMD cant bounce back so soon.
We all know that focus can be good, valuable, and like every valuable thing it is also costly. While you focus on one thing you necessarily blind yourself to everything else. For this reason, whether you’ve been focused on positive achievement or on negative despair, there are things you’ve missed. Your vision of the options and resources available to you, is incomplete. The more reason why some cadres moved from UNIP, to MMD, to PF and will surely move when time comes. Ba muselela kwakaba. Lol.
Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do. – Pope John XXIII umuyashi advised.
Consider that whatever you’ve been through in the past has hidden some of your best opportunities of the present. It’s time to let go of the conflicts, defeats, and victories that are over, so you can gain access to the possibilities that are now. Whatever you’ve been focused on, whether a desire, a frustration, a challenge, allow it to fall cleanly away from your awareness for a while. Open your eyes, open your mind, open your willingness to discover a new and better way forward. Not upona fye Grade 7, 17 times. Become a Farmer, Driver, Carpenter, Mechanic, Cadre otherwise you are wasting your parents money on books, pencils, pens and school fees.
Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen, not in the future but right now. Realize that nothing is too good. Allow absolutely nothing to hamper you or hold you up in any way. – Eileen Caddy
You don’t have to abandon your goals and ambitions, and your problems will not magically go away. However, you can benefit greatly from widening your vision for a while, to consider options that your focus and commitment may have hidden from you. Don’t let your powerful focus lock you into tunnel vision, and don’t let your persistence degrade into stubbornness. Some Politicians are like that. I know several. Widen your vision every now and then, take a look around, and make sure you’re not ignoring your best possibilities. Remember, Every Exit is an Entry somewhere. Have a blessed week folks. Stay well and be blessed. KEKK 09/19
